How to hit 'Big' - by Ernie Els

If you want to hit big you have to swing big. First, try widening your stance by an inch or two, to give yourself a firm base to swing. And take the club away from the ball wide and slow. That gives your swing some width, which is vital.

Also, forget the phrase 'keep your head down'; it does ten times more harm than good. In my experience, when someone is told to keep their head down, they tend to bury their chin into their chest at address. From there, they can't possibly make a good turn in the backswing as there's no room for the left shoulder to turn into. And no turn means no power. Think 'keep your chin up'. This gives your left shoulder space to turn into in the backswing and a good turn is one of the keys to hitting 'Big'.

One final thought - try to resist the temptation to want to rip the cover off the golf ball. Brute force seldom works. Instead, think rhythm and making dead-solid contact. You’ll get all the distance you need.
