A few tips for better play in the wind

LISA MACKENZIE – GOLF SPECIALIST

For the average golfer just getting the ball airborne and in the right direction is the challenge for the day. Bring in a typical Cape South Easter and a new challenge awaits the game.

Often the most simplest of changes will give the player a satisfactory result. Here are 5 easy ways to try and handle the wind.

The idea is to try and keep the ball down and out the wind so that the ball flight is not affected. To keep the ball low try follow these easy steps:

  1. Take one or two clubs more depending on the severity of the wind
  2. Play the ball slightly farther back in your stance (1/2 to one ball back of its normal position)
  3. Narrow your stance, setting your weight more toward the front side. This will reduce your movement off the ball, shorten the arc and reduce the power shift, which leads to lower ball flights.
  4. Grip down on the club. Besides giving you the feeling of more control this also shortens the arc to create a shallower path and lower ball flight.
  5. Grip the club with relaxed hands and swing smoothly, free of tension.

The most important tip is to remember... DON'T TRY TO SWING FASTER IN THE WIND THIS WILL ONLY CREATE PROBLEMS. SWING IT EASY IN THE WIND AND KEEP IT LOW.
