Player Profile: Hennie Otto

Hennie Otto

On Sunday the South African Hennie Otto won his second Italian Open in a two-stroke victory over Britain’s David Howell. This player profile traces Otto’s path to success as he celebrates his third professional victory on the European Tour.

First steps in golf

38-year-old Otto was born in the South African town of Boksburg, near Johannesburg. He discovered the game as a teenager and spent much of his spare time at the driving range during his high school years. Otto’s dedication soon paid off as his amateur career took shape – he made his professional debut on the South African Sunshine Tour in 1999.

Heading for Europe

Otto’s career on the Sunshine Tour has been a successful one, with the South African recording 12 victories on his home tours over the past 15 years. With two wins to his name, Otto headed to Europe in 1999 and made his Challenge Tour debut – he would join the European Tour the following season.

Adapting to the pace and difficulty of the European Tour, Otto weathered the storm to record his first victory at the Italian Open in 2008. Prior to this, he had retained his Tour Card but was not a regular top-100 player on the European Circuit. A second ET victory at the co-sanctioned 2011 South African Open placed Otto firmly in the winner’s circle of Continental golf.

A great all-rounder

Known for his good humour and competitive spirit, Otto has won many fans in Europe while remaining popular in his home country.

Splitting his time between the European and Sunshine Tours, he brings a well-balanced approach to golf to each tournament. Otto’s long tee shots contrast with his delicate approach to putting, making him a serious contender on two continents.

With three wins on the European Tour, Hennie Otto continues to make his mark on the international golf circuit. Golf fans should keep an eye on this seasoned player as he sets his sights on further victories.
