Player Profile: Angel Jimenez

On Sunday, Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez won his 19th European Tour title when he was victorious at the co-sanctioned UBS Hong Kong Open. As this seasoned veteran celebrates 24 years on the European Tour, this week's player profile highlights some of his most recent career milestones.

A native of Malaga Spain, 48-year-old Jimenez was born in 1964. He first came to the attention of golf fans in the late 1980s when his initial foray into the world of European golf saw him finish inside the top 100 on the tour – an achievement he has repeated every year since 1989. Jimenez was victorious for the first time at the 1992 Belgian Open, having weathered the competition to break into the winners' circle four years after his European Tour debut.

After a brief lull in his performance during the mid-1990s, Jimenez was victorious once again at the 1998 Turespana Masters. Three more victories culminated in his win at the 1999 Volvo Masters, putting Jimenez firmly in the category of top contenders on the European Tour.

The mid-2000s were a period of great success for Jimenez. Following wins at the 2004 BMW Asian Open, BMW International Open, and the Hong Kong Open, the Spaniard lifted the trophy at the 2005 Celtic Manor Wales Open. As Jimenez entered his forties, his success on the course proved to fans once again that in golf, experience often trumps youthful energy.

Over the past few years, Jimenez has lifted the trophy at several prestigious tournaments including the Dubai Desert Classic, the European Masters, and the French Open in 2010. Sunday's victory is a crowning achievement for the Spanish veteran as he enters his 25th year on the European Tour in 2013.

Known for his easy-going Mediterranean temperament and an unashamed connoisseur of fine wine and cigars, Jimenez has always emphasised the importance of balance in his professional life. With a commitment to physical conditioning as well as personal enjoyment, Angel Jimenez has won many fans around the world as he continues to make his mark on the European Tour in his unique and loveable personal style.
