Villegas wins at Wyndham

Colombia’s Camilo Villegas won his first event in four years on the US PGA Tour when he edged out a one-stroke victory at the Wyndham Championship on Sunday.

Villegas carded a final round score of 63, or seven under par, before retiring to the clubhouse. Having set the bar high, the Colombian watched as the likes of Bill Haas and Fredrik Jacobson did their best to force a playoff over the final holes of the championship.

Late summer weather provided ideal playing conditions on the course at Sedgefield Country Club, but as play wound down on Sunday afternoon the string of players chasing Villegas’ lead were unable to nudge him off the podium.

The Colombian finished a single stroke ahead of Haas and Jacobson, with Heath Slocum in third place. Several runners-up had shared the lead at various points during the final round, but bogey-riddled back nine performances stopped each competitor in his tracks.

Villegas now has four PGA Tour titles under his belt. He last won a PGA Tour event at the 2010 Honda Classic, carding a commanding five stroke victory against America’s Anthony Kim.

Warren wins Denmark Open

On the European Tour, Scotland’s Mark Warren won the Denmark Open (also known as the Made in Denmark tournament) in a final-round battle against the Welshman Bradley Dredge.

Warren carded five birdies on his way to a 68 during the final round, while Dredge came in with a score of 70. The two players were neck-and-neck for much of the final round, with Dredge dominating on the front nine but failing to keep up the pace after the turn.

Seeing his opportunity to win, Warren kept the birdies coming as he carved his way through the back nine. The Scotsman gained two strokes over his rival, lifting the trophy at his third European Tour victory. Warren won his last event at the 2007 Johnny Walker Championship.
