Course Review: Columbia Edgewater Country Club – Portland (British Columbia), Canada

Columbia Edgewater Country Club

Next week the LPGA travels to the Canadian province of British Columbia for the 2014 Portland Classic. This golf course review offers golfers a whirlwind tour of the stately golf club that is considered one of the best of its kind in the Pacific Northwest.

90 years of golfing excellence
Columbia Edgewater celebrates its 90th anniversary next year and though it may be time-weathered, the course is up-to-date and kept pristine by a team of dedicated green keepers.

The A.V. Macan-designed championship course offers a challenging round of golf which is also a feast for the eyes, while the 9-hole Mason course caters for players with limited time and is more forgiving of higher handicaps.

Unlike many traditional golf clubs which offer a practice tee or two at best, Columbia Edgewater has two acres of practice facilities which are highly rated. These include practice greens, a driving range, and chipping facilities. The club also offers professional instruction through their resident pros.

Possibly the best parkland course in the Northwest
Columbia Edgewater prides itself on attention to detail and a manicured approach to course conditioning – the results of this perfectionism are immediately obvious from the first tee to the final green.

Daily mowing and maintenance result in a course that is almost picture-perfect, with tall pine trees flanking the dense fairways and smooth greens.

Tricky bunkering is the norm at Columbia Edgewood, with visiting golfers having to perfect their own game as they negotiate tight lies and challenging greens throughout. The combination of immaculate course conditions and difficult shots will appeal to a seasoned player and low-handicap weekend golfer.  For a more relaxing round of golf, players can always opt to play the nine hole course.

Playing the course
The championship course at Columbia Edgewater is reserved for members, but members of the public may play the 9-hole course and use the club’s practice facilities. For more information, please visit the club’s website
