The wave of talented young players from Europe is set to continue in 2014, with a number of dynamic players having established themselves on the European and Challenge tours over the past 12 months. This week we meet three of the young players who are making their mark on European Golf.
Peter Uihlein – European Rookie of the Year
The European Tour awarded its prestigious Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year Award to Peter Uihlein in 2013 – making him the first-ever American to win the award.
Uihlein won the 2013 Madeira Islands Open and narrowly lost the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in a playoff against Britain's David Howell in the same season.
Johan Carlsson
Sweden's Johan Carlsson is currently ranked fifth on the Challenge Tour as he makes his European Tour debut in 2014. The young Swede, who towers over most competitors at a lengthy six-foot-five, won the 2013 Kazakhstan Open to secure a place in the top 10 and his European Tour card for the 2014 season.
Carlsson made six top-10 finishes in 2013, weathering the pressures of professional golf and staging a comeback of sorts after a shaky start to the season. His performance on the Challenge Tour bodes well for his foray into top-level European Tour golf.
Nacho Elvira
25-year-old Nacho Elvira is the Challenge Tour's latest Spanish golfing phenomenon. After a slow start to the 2013 season, Elvira picked up the pace during the last few months of the year – the Spaniard jumped from 85th to 9th on the Challenge Tour's money list over the last five events of the season.
After his win at the co-sanctioned Foshan Open in China, Elvira finished the season just inside the top 10, gaining automatic qualification for the 2014 European Tour season.
