Every so often, a perfectly struck tee shot weathers the odds and lands right on the green casually rolling into the cup. These seemingly magical shots can turn an ordinary round into a piece of golfing history.
The hole-on-one (or ace) is a rare and exciting moment in any round of golf, no matter how skilled the lucky player who holes it may be. Here are some of the most famous holes-in-one from the world of professional golf.
The greatest hole-in-one crowd pleaser
The title of most famous hole in one may be debatable, but there’s little doubt that Tiger Woods’ ace at the 1997 Phoenix Open drew the greatest reaction from the crowd.
Teeing up at the sixteenth hole – also known as the Stadium hole because a wall of fans overlooks the green – Woods sent his ball straight for the hole. The crowd erupted in applause, rising to their feet as Woods appeared on the green – click here to relive the excitement.
The longest hole-in-one
The record for longest ace was set in 2007 by the American Brett Melson, who was a student at the San Diego Golf Academy’s Hawaii campus at the time.
Melson finished the final hole at the Ko’olau Golf Club with just a single shot, covering a distance of 448 yards to card an albatross, or double-eagle at the eighteenth. Despite setting a world record, Melson has kept a low profile on the world golf circuit ever since.
The most unbelievable hole-in-one
This amazing hole in one took place at the 2012 Allianz Championship, courtesy of the American golfer Fuzzy Zoeller.
After teeing up and sending the ball straight down the fairway, Zoeller began his walk to the green to attempt a chip shot. Just then, the ball began to move off the rough at the edge of the green, making its way all the way to the cup and rolling in as if nothing had happened – the footage of this hole-in-one is a must-see!
