The Best Golf in Western Australia

Last week’s Perth International, which was won by Denmark’s Thorbjorn Olesen, gave golf fans a taste of the scenery and fine weather that Western Australia has to offer. From coastal courses with splendid sea views to lush parkland layouts, this region boasts some of the best golf down under.

The perfect place to build a golf course

With good rainfall and sunshine many months of the year, Western Australia offers great weather for golf – the favourable climate has resulted in hundreds of golf courses being built in the region, and 230 of these are fully open to the public. Here are some of the best courses on offer:

Nullarbor Links

In true bold Australian style, the idea behind Nullarbor Links was big and visionary. This “course” is a highway route, extending more than 1300 kilometres! Golfers may stop at each one of 18 towns along the way and play a single hole, moving on to the next town on the route. Walking this course may not be recommended, but Nullarbor Links certainly provides a great way to tour Western Australia by road.

Canning Vale Country Club

Just a few miles outside of Perth, Canning Vale’s 9-hole layout provides a relaxing break for golf travellers who don’t have a lot of time on their hands. A real test of the short game, this scenic but challenging course features several large water hazards and bunkers that aren’t too difficult to avoid – but aren’t easy to escape from.

Albany Golf Club

Visitors to Western Australia’s south coast are in for a treat at this immaculate public course. Albany Golf Club features an 18-hole links layout that is ranked among the top 100 Australian golf courses. Shady trees and broad, shallow bunkers create a luxurious feel on the course, which tests power and accuracy off almost every tee.
