On Sunday America’s David Lipsky won the European Masters to mark his first victory on the European Tour. This week’s player profile takes a look at the young career of this talented player as he becomes a household name in both Asian and Continental golf.
26-year-old Lipsky was born and raised in Los Angeles, California. His father Aaron and mother Yon Suk (who is originally from South Korea) soon realised that their son had great golfing potential.
The young Lipsky took up the game in earnest during his high school years, embarking on a successful amateur career while acing his exams. After winning the 2004 Junior Tour Championship and several other golf titles in the Los Angeles Area, Lipsky went on to enjoy a promising college golf career.
Lipsky attended Northwestern University, choosing a challenging degree in political science and history while competing on the college golf circuit. In the 2007 season he won the Notre Dame Invitational, and in 2009 he made the All-Big Ten first team before graduating from college.
Lipsky made his professional debut in 2011, following his college graduation. Unlike many American amateurs who choose to make their careers in the United States, Lipsky has focused most of his attention on the European and Asian Tours over the past four seasons.
In 2012, after receiving a medal at the Asia Tour’s Q School, Lipsky won his first tournament at the Cambodian Classic – beating the Elmer Salvador of the Philippines in a playoff for the title.
Lipsky’s win at the European Masters marks the first big win of his professional career. Weathering a final-round playoff to win in spectacular style, this young player burst onto the international golf scene last week. Fans should keep an eye on Lipsky as he continues his successful career on two continents.
