Oliver Wilson clinches Dunhill Links in first professional victory

The United Kingdom's Oliver Wilson won his first professional title on Sunday at the Dunhill Links Championship, following a battle for the trophy against a group of competitors which included world number one Rory McIlroy.

Wilson led the tournament's third round to begin play with a three-stroke advantage on Sunday. Despite a spirited charge by the likes of McIlroy and Richie Ramsay, who shared second place with Tommy Fleetwood, Wilson held his nerve during the final round to retain a one-shot lead over his rivals.

McIlroy seemed ready to launch a serious challenge for the trophy on Sunday, after climbing his way up the leader board during the third round.

The world's top-ranked golfer had a shaky start on Sunday, with a double bogey at the first hole, but carded four birdies in a row to put himself in contention for the title. Unfortunately for McIlroy, Wilson's resolve to win was especially strong on the final day, and the world number one was forced to settle for second place.

Wilson had been struggling on the European Tour prior to Sunday's win, with his position on the World Golf Rankings falling below 700. The former Ryder Cup team member has weathered a dry spell which lasted more than a decade, and with his first European Title in hand, his patience has paid off.
