This week the PGA Tour travels to Georgia’s St Simons Island for the McGladrey Classic. As the world’s top players travel to the South for a weekend of coastal golfing action, our course review takes a look at some of the best golf courses in the Peach State.
The perfect climate for golf
With pleasant weather most months of the year and plentiful rainfall that produces the lush fairways and smooth greens of Augusta fame, Georgia is a state with an ideal golfing climate.
Players should expect fair weather in spring and fall, with a few weeks of extreme temperatures in summer and winter – a far cry from some US states where courses can be snowed-under for weeks at a time.
Where to find the best courses
Georgia’s best-known golf course has to be Augusta – but the chances of ever playing there are slim at best for most golfers. Fortunately, there are a number of good courses spread across the state, with most medium sized towns having a public course where tee times can easily be booked.
The best public courses in Georgia are found on St Simons Island, near Savannah, and in the Greensboro area. Sea Island, Reynolds Plantation, and Savannah Harbor are just three examples of excellent public courses that rival private clubs when it comes to facilities and quality of service.
Off the beaten track
For more adventurous golf travellers, the lesser-known golf courses in the Peach State offer an opportunity to enjoy a round of golf at very reasonable rates. Visitors to the city of Athens (Georgia) may explore the golf offering at the University of Georgia’s public course, while Villa Rica offers its unusually named Frog Course as a must-see for visiting golfers.
